It is another mixed bag this month on the Instant Game Collection. Some people do not appear to be too happy with the list of games announced yesterday. Personally, I am very happy. So what is gaming goodness to PlayStation Plus subscribers get next week.

PlayStation Plus - November Update
Posted by
Mark
With only a few weeks to go to the PlayStation 4, it is time for the final PSPlus update before it moves to support three formats. With the change over to PlayStation 4 also comes change for current subscribers. From this month on the Instant Game Collection will now only receive two titles on PlayStation 3, rather than the three we currently recieve. This will undoubtly upset a few people, but Sony have to make changes in order to incorporate the new PS4 in to the scheme. Seeing that I havent even touched the three games offered in the October update, I can't see dropping down to two is that much of a problem for a gamer like me.
What then does November hold? Lets take a look...

PlayStation Plus - October Update
Posted by
Mark
I have managed to drag myself away from Los Santos and all its charms (mainly Trevor) and remembered that I run a gaming website. So lets get on with it and what better way to get started than with the latest update for PlayStation Plus. October's update (released this Wednesday) is another stonking selection of top flight entertainment. Starting with...
Far Cry 3 is one of the best first person shooters of recent years and the best open world shooter out there. A group of friends are captured when their extreme sports vacation takes them to the wrong side of a bad island. Trapped on the Rook Islands, you need to find and free your friends before the local warlords kill them. Your journey will see you face your own demons and test your sanity. We rated this game a 10 out of 10 last year and if you haven't played it yet, now is the perfect chance.
Next up is Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen the standalone expansion to the successful monster slaying rpg, Dragons Dogma. Thankfully for new players to the game, the entire original game is included so that you catch up with the story before taking on the new quests. This action hack and slash RPG also has elements of survival horror and a fantastic combat system. I have been waiting to play this for a while and I am really pleased to see it arrive on the Instant Game Collection.
Finally for PS3 owners this month comes Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, a modern day sequel to the Amiga classic The Great Giana Sisters (which itself was a Super Mario Bros clone). With great visuals and fantastic platform action, you take on the role of Giana as she fights to free her sister from the dragon who has kidnapped her. Giana can use her two dream personas to help her on journey, ne cute and one punk. Expect lots of classic jewel collecting platform action when it comes to PS Plus later this week.
As always, Vita owners you also have two new titles added to the Vita's growing instant game collection.
Street Fighter X Tekken is the cross over beat em up developed by Capcom and features the characters from the Street Fighter and Tekken universes (Surprisingly!) Set in the same pseudeo 2D scene that Super Street Fighter IV used and features the fast fighting that fans across the world love. Expect to get beaten a lot online.
Finally Touch My Katamari, which is er.... um... the best roll rubbish into an ever increasing ball-em-up ever? Personally, this is one of those quirky Japanese games, that lots of people enjoy and I know I should, but I just don't get it. Might be getting old? At least we can all try this out for free and see if we can grow to love it!
So thats it. Another months worth titles available for you to download this Wednesday with the weekly PSN Store update. Although, I understand if the monster that is GTA V still has you in its grasp, just add them to your account and download them when you are ready to play them (next year sometime!). Until next month then, happy gaming!

Hotline Miami - Review (PSV/PS3)
Posted by
Mark
Due to the high level of brutal violence, this game is not for Little Gamers (EVER!)
Hotline Miami is the kind of game that the Daily Mail loves to write about. It is essentially the fabled murder simulator that people on Fox News have been banging on about for years. It should be banned, there should be liberal parents and moral do-gooders campaigning constantly that this game will destroy us all. Is it because of the games retro styled graphics that it can away with it in this era of 3D realistic shooters?
I know the real reason why... its because its so damn fun!

Hotline Miami - Coming to PlayStation this week
Posted by
Mark
This week sees Indie hit Hotline Miami, released on both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. More importantly it comes out on the Vita. Hotline Miami is perfect for the Vita and is yet another instant must buy for the handheld. Once again, its is a cross buy title, so buy it once and get it on both PS3 and Vita.
If you have been living under a rock the last few years, you may not of heard of this game. Hopefully though you may of heard of the film Drive, starring Ryan Gosling. Drive feature a nameless getaway driver, who after a job goes wrong exacts a brutal and bloody war on the men who orchestrated the job in order to save his neighbour and her young son. The film is outstanding and two things that stand out the most in it is the ultra violence towards the films climax (its the film with that elevator scene) and its hypnotic eighties electro score.
Two developers, Jonatan Söderström and Dennis Wedin saw Drive and took the next logical step. What if it was a video game, and so Hotline Miami was born. The game is a top down affair where the objective of each level is to kill all of the enemies in the level. The only snag is you are just as vulnerable as your prey, so one wrong move is fatal. The soundtrack is amazing, graphical style is pure eighties and the gameplay is so addictive you will be playing this into the early hours every day.
If you do one thing this week, buy Hotline Miami (£7.29 / €8.99 / $9.99). I fyou do two things this week, watch Drive and then buy Hotline Miami. You wont regret it!

Persona 4 Golden - The first ten hours
Posted by
Mark
2013 seems to be year for Japanese Role Playing Games (JRPG). Maybe this is also due to my switch from Xbox 360 to Sony PlayStation, as Microsoft's console has not attracted much attention from the Japanese developers over the years. So now I find myself well into a playthrough of Final Fantasy VII, with Final Fantasy IX sitting there waiting, 10 hours into Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch and now I have to throw Persona 4 Golden into the mix as well.

Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken - Coming to PS Vita next Week
Posted by
Mark

Late last year, I was lucky enough to play the PC version of a quirky little shooter called Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken. The game was 2D shooter in the vein of Shank, but with birds. It was great game with plenty to enjoy and now it is coming to the Vita next week.

Is this the end for the Vita?
Posted by
Mark
Let's be honest, as console launches go the Vita has suffered more than most. Seeing dramatically low sales, even in Japan which has seen the Vita regularly outsold by the PSP and nowhere close to the 3DS. This possibly due to the initial high price point (3G RRP was £279.99) compared to other portable devices at launch. The consoles price has dropped to a very reasonable level. Then the software line up has not been tremendous, with long gaps between releases, which is not very unusual for a new console. In the UK there has been, up until very recently, little to no marketing of the Vita via mainstream outlets. Supermarkets that initially stocked the console and software have mostly stopped selling it altogether.
Sony themselves seemed to have given up on the Vita at E3 this year where they barely mentioned the console at all during their presentation, much to the dismay of Vita owners, who had pinned their hopes on catching a glimpse of the next wave of Vita titles in action. All we saw was a logo for Call of Duty and a brief trailer of Assassins Creed III: Liberation.
Now it hasn't been all doom and gloom. In fact, as a Vita owner myself, it has defined my gaming since the day I owned it. The Vita has given me the chance to play my first Uncharted game, play almost perfect renditions of console fighters Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom and Mortal Kombat and Play the finest Wipeout experience this generation. Then there's the PSP back catalogue available on the PlayStation store. Finally in summer the PlayStation One compatibility was launched and another catalogue of games were added.
Now here we are at the end of the year and the four most anticipated titles for the system are here. LittleBigplanet Vita, Assassins Creed III: Liberation, Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified. If these games are done right then they are the system sellers the Vita desparately needs for the Christmas gaming chaos. Sony have even ramped the marketing and now TV adverts for each of these titles are to be seen regularly.
A quick glance at Metacritic paints a different picture mixed reviews for Assassins Creed: Liberation and Need for Speed and an absolute panning for Black Ops: Declassified. Along with the critical mauling, there seem to be some very unhappy and vocal Vita owners out there. Then over this side of the pond, the lack of updates as to why Retro City Rampage to arrive on the EU store has seen plenty of further disgruntled comments on the PlayStation blog.
What are Sony doing wrong? How can they save the Vita from an early grave.
Firstly, Sony are paying the price for their own marketing hype. The Vita was set to bring PS3 quality gaming in to the palm of your hand. That is what some Vita owners expect and they don't like it when the get dodgy ports of inferior versions (Yes Lego games, you know what you did) on their new wonder machine. Very few games have been able to get up to that level with Uncharted and Wipeout being the only early examples of Sony's claim. Gravity Rush has a certain charm about it, but didn't appeal to mainstream gamers.
With publishers tightening the purse strings, developers have also been unable to dedicate development of the titles to yet another console. This can be seen with Fifa 13, which was pretty much a roster update with a few tweaks to the previous game (which itself was based on the older Fifa 11). Criterion are the only developer to develop a specific Vita version alongside the development of home console versions. The results are astounding. A perfect replication of the open world environment with a slight loss of graphic fidelity and traffic density. Proving that the Vita is more than up to the task of running the title we play at home.

Call of Duty Black Ops Declassified has thrown a doubt in the hopes of the Vita's continued success. Instead of being the glorious defining moment of the Vita so far, it has caused the community to bicker. You can see my first impressions here. It has brought to head the argument of the pricing structure for Vita titles. With some games being retailed for the same amount as its home counter parts many people are not happy. A lot of reviewers are saying that for £40, Call of Duty does not offer enough to warrant that price. The blame is being laid at Sony's doorstep, which is odd because Activision would of set the price for it. If it is one thing Activision are good at it is milking the cash cow.
Sony are hitting back though and hopefully the Christmas marketing offensive along with a special edition Call of Duty Vita will boost sales. The main weapon Sony have up their sleeve is Playstation Plus. Next week, the very successful PS3 subscription service, PlayStation Plus launches on the Vita. It features all of the components of the PS3 service, 1gb of online storage, discounts on the playstation store and exclusive offers. Finally the all important instant game collection comes to the Vita. Offering subscribers access to a number of free titles every month for as long as they are a Plus subscriber. As of next week Vita owners will be able to sign up to Plus and get Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Gravity Rush, new game Chronovolt and digital download hit Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack for free. The best thing is if your own a PS3 and already signed up member of Plus, all of the Vita content is yours as well, at no extra charge.
Next week also sees the first major title to utilise Sony's Cross-Buy scheme. Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale is available on PS3 and Vita. Buy the game on the PS3 though, and you will get a code for the digital download of the Vita game at no extra cost again. Other games to support this currently are Ratchet & Clank: Q Force and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. Hopefully this scheme will include more titles into 2013.
There is one title yet to hit European shores that will hopefully sell units to quite a few people. Persona 4 Golden comes out in Europe next spring and seeing as the series has a huge following amongst gamers all over the world, there are high hopes for its success. The US version (out next week) is currently the highest rated Vita game so far, scoring a 96 on Metacritic. Following a group of High School students, who team up to solve a series of supernatural murders. Persona 4 Golden upgrades the original PlayStation version and expands on it, adding new features and story elements to the game. The game supports the wireless networking features of the Vita, allowing a player to call in help from other players to help in dungeon battles. We will have to wait until February 2013 to play it though. The Persona series has been hugely successful on the PSP and that hardcore market will definitely want a piece of this on the Vita.Appealing to the Hardcore JRPG player and Retro gaming enthusiast is commendable thing to do and really does show the flexibility of the platform Sony has created. The PSP survived on this kind of feature set for many years. Is it enough though for a handheld with the power and potential of the Vita to be in the shadow of the 3DS. The system needs more than a Call of Duty game to get people to notice it. The Vita needs one thing... Rockstar.
With several very successful GTA games on the PSP and with the fifth installment due early spring 2013. The time is right for Rockstar to do something very special. As suggested last week by wojciechmusialkiewi (lets call him Jeff) on the Eurogamer Forums, What if GTA: San Andreas was given the HD treatment and launched on the Vita. I know it is a pipe dream at the moment, but just imagine it!
At the moment, the next few months are hugely important for the Vita's future. Currently the 2013 release schedule on the console is looking sparse. Third support is crucial for the long term survival of any system. Hopefully, this time next year I will be able to write about the Vita and its success.
It deserves to succeed, simply because Sony have made a great piece of hardware that is capable of so much and we have only just seen the beginning. Lets hope that Father Christmas can bring the Vita what wants for Christmas... a future.

Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified - First Impressions
Posted by
Mark
After braving the midnight launch at my local Game store (@game_hemel). I returned in the early hours with not one but two Call of Duty games. COD: Black Ops 2 for the old 360 and the little known about Black Ops declassified on the Vita. Sony announced the game back in June at E3 to tremendous reaction from the assembled journalists and gaming elite. Then they announced that the game was being developed by Nihilistic and then waited until Gamescom to show a trailer that looked... well.. not very good some would say (and they did...alot!).
Well now the real thing is here and the Vita community appears to be divided. With no official reviews showing yet on metacritic the users reviews are the battleground for this title at the moment. Reviews like this one:
"The game is not worth the money. It is too horrible. The main frustrations this year. She had not even reached the title game average. Sounds just do terrible weapons. 0 out of 10"
are going up against reviews like this:
"Surprised by the quality after all the doom and gloom! It's excellent hope it helps sell some vitas!! Looks better graphically than the old trailers which nearly killed this game Thanks god it's good!!! 10 out of 10"
Who to believe? Is it good, great or total Sh**te. Well I have had the pleasure of commuting into London today on the trains. Plenty of time to get to grips with CODBLOPSDEC (is that really what we are going to call it?). First of all, If you are thinking of taking your Vita and this game out on public transport, wear some headphones. Otherwise people look at you as if you are a mass murderer in training. Which may or may not be the vibe you want to give out.
I liked Resistance on the Vita, whilst it was not the best FPS I had ever played, Nihilistic did sow the seeds that a true dual stick console FPS could be portable. So they were probably the best people to bring Call of Duty to the Vita. Now it is worth mentioning that the reason why so many
The Operations mode is a selection of 10 levels, featuring the star of the previous Black Ops game and details covert missions in various regions of the world from 1975 to 1982. It sort of a follow up to the original Black Ops. Each operation has a set of objectives that must be completed to finish the mission. You are then rated for the mission and awarded up to three Gold stars depending on how well you do. It's like a mash up of Call of Duty, Unit 13 and Angry Birds.
Yes, the Operations levels are short. The opening level can be completed in 5 minutes on regular. If I try on Hardened though, I get killed a lot! Operations mode is very clever in that it is the Call of Duty experience, but with the short, sharp, drop in and out gameplay that the Vita has become good at. Its going to take the average gamer a while to get 3 gold stars in every operation on regular, without going neat the other two difficulties.
As well as Operations, you also have two other single player modes. A five level Time Trial mode that is based around the obstacle course tutorials from the previous games. Its fun and kind of addictive too. Although shooting the cardboard enemies is never as fun. Hostile's mode is basically horde mode. Wave upon wave of enemy spawn to hunt you down. They get more aggressive as the stage plays out and start toting armour and heavy guns. The players goal as always is to kill them all and survive. This is perfectly suited to the commuting gamer. It provides you with the Call of Duty fix whilst not having to invest in story lines or scripted events.
At this time, I havent even began to play multiplayer yet and I love the game. It is not the Call of Duty that everyone wanted to see on the Vita, but one thing that you cannot deny about CODBLOPSDEC is this...
It's Call of Duty on a Handheld with decent controls and gameplay!
So go on Vita owners, your console needs you and you never know you may like it as much as I do.
More to come as I delve deeper into the game over the next few days.

Ecolibrium – Out today on Vita
Posted by
Mark
After the success of the wacky "Frobisher Says" on the Vita, Sony promised more titles for their "Discovery Apps" series. Today sees the release of the second title to fit into this category, Ecolibrium (see what they did there).
Ecolibrium is a real-time eco-system simulator and the aim of the game is create and maintain balance in your world. By selecting which plants and creatures to live in your eco-system you have the power to create an ecological nirvana or an eco-nightmare. The game uses extensive use of the Vita's Near functionality. Players can acquire new animals via hunting in their own worlds or via GPS. Exile unwanted creatures to Near and they will roam onto another players Vita. Also, if you want an specific animal, you can check out the online auction house. Take part in multiplayer challenges and see where you stand in the global leaderboards. The trailer below shows off the amount of features and the gameplay you can expect from this interesting looking title.
Oh, one more thing. It's free!
Back to the old school

It has been a few weeks since the release of the long awaited PS Vita 1.8 firmware, with its anticipated PlayStation One compatibility. It was bumpy start, releasing the firmware the day before the titles were added to the PSN store and then after the launch of the PSONE Classics store finding that most of the games registered as not downloadable onto Vita system. These issues have now been resolved the PSONE Classics store is also seeing it first sale with some amazing titles from yesteryear up for grabs.
Now, I have always found retro gaming a bit of a let-down. It is like when watching TV you flick onto an old rerun of The A-Team. It's really good for 5 seconds to remember your child memories and then when you get into it you find that it was actually not that good at all and you have managed to destroy your fondest childhood memories. It's the same with retro gaming for me, it is great to look back at some of the games I used to play, but ultimately it ends up ruining my clouded memory of my original experience.
Now though I find myself hopelessly hooked to a game that is 15 years old. I am of course talking about Squaresoft's epic RPG, Final Fantasy VII. 15 years ago, this was the first RPG I had ever played. Before that I only played action games and platformers. I remember being worried about taking a game that was so bug it was on 3 discs. Would I even last a game that boasted 100+ hours of story and adventure. The answer, back then was no. Although, I think I got to the beginning of disc 3. Now though, I can see myself finally getting to the end of this amazing game. The one thing I have been enjoying though is the story and humour in the game. In my impatient youth, I am sure I just hit the O button to get rid of the boring text and get to the next battle as quickly as possible. What a stupid gamer I was.
Apart from Final Fantasy VII, the update is allowing me to enjoy those PSONE games I missed the first time. The Fear Effect games are wonderful sci-fi adventure games and are going for the bargain price of £1.99. Also, as of today the sale includes Tekken 1 & 2 for 1.99 each, The Resident evil series for £3.99 each and the original Rayman is going for a couple of quid.So another feature to add to the list of already incredible features. The PS Vita surely is the greatest portable gaming system ever made. Sony just need to advertise it better than the current Lego Harry Potter/Batman 2 advert.
