Back to the old school

It has been a few weeks since the release of the long awaited PS Vita 1.8 firmware, with its anticipated PlayStation One compatibility. It was bumpy start, releasing the firmware the day before the titles were added to the PSN store and then after the launch of the PSONE Classics store finding that most of the games registered as not downloadable onto Vita system. These issues have now been resolved the PSONE Classics store is also seeing it first sale with some amazing titles from yesteryear up for grabs.
Now, I have always found retro gaming a bit of a let-down. It is like when watching TV you flick onto an old rerun of The A-Team. It's really good for 5 seconds to remember your child memories and then when you get into it you find that it was actually not that good at all and you have managed to destroy your fondest childhood memories. It's the same with retro gaming for me, it is great to look back at some of the games I used to play, but ultimately it ends up ruining my clouded memory of my original experience.
Now though I find myself hopelessly hooked to a game that is 15 years old. I am of course talking about Squaresoft's epic RPG, Final Fantasy VII. 15 years ago, this was the first RPG I had ever played. Before that I only played action games and platformers. I remember being worried about taking a game that was so bug it was on 3 discs. Would I even last a game that boasted 100+ hours of story and adventure. The answer, back then was no. Although, I think I got to the beginning of disc 3. Now though, I can see myself finally getting to the end of this amazing game. The one thing I have been enjoying though is the story and humour in the game. In my impatient youth, I am sure I just hit the O button to get rid of the boring text and get to the next battle as quickly as possible. What a stupid gamer I was.
Apart from Final Fantasy VII, the update is allowing me to enjoy those PSONE games I missed the first time. The Fear Effect games are wonderful sci-fi adventure games and are going for the bargain price of £1.99. Also, as of today the sale includes Tekken 1 & 2 for 1.99 each, The Resident evil series for £3.99 each and the original Rayman is going for a couple of quid.
So another feature to add to the list of already incredible features. The PS Vita surely is the greatest portable gaming system ever made. Sony just need to advertise it better than the current Lego Harry Potter/Batman 2 advert.
