PlayStation Plus Update - August 2014
Posted by
Mark
Yes I know, I missed a month, but with good reason (see my latest Little Gamer Update). To be honest July's offering for PS Plus was was not the greatest. Although that is all going to change today with the August update for PS Plus subscribers. This month sees two exclusive indie titles that I have been looking forward to released for FREE! Two more classic indie titles that most people should already own, a LEGO game for another easy platinum. Oh! and Crysis 3.

TwoLittleGamers plays Killzone Shadow Fall - Part 6 & Part 7

Mark
After a break from recording my first series of let's play videos. If thanks to INFAMOUS SECOND SON and Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. I finally got around to siting down and getting stuck into the second mission of Killzone Shadow Fall. Good news, we going in to space! Bad news, to move reactor cells around in a series of door unlocking puzzles.
That's right, in space no-one can hear your boredom. Enjoy part 6!
Thankfully, part 7 hots up a little bit, with the introduction of some gun fights at last! Before throwing Lucas into the mother of all Reactor Cell challenges.
Stay tuned for part 8, where Lucas fixes the fuses and plumbs in the Space Stations toilet.

Thanks to the amazing Share function of the new PlayStation 4, TwoLittleGamers is finally able to join in the Lets Play revolution. In the first series of videos, I jump into the first two missions of Killzone Shadow Fall. You can check out part 1 below and the next 4 parts will be up over the next few days.
Of course, I hope to bring alot more content in this way from this way including playthroughs of inFAMOUS: Second Son and Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. I may even bestow my dulcet tones upon you, now that I found the option on the PS4 to record mic chat in with video captures. Thank you Sony for such an awesome set of features!

So last week, I celebrated my Fortieth birthday and took that step over the hill. I had a great time and was kept on my toes by a series of wonderful surprises by my lovely wife. I had a surprise Weekend away in a swanky hotel in a beautiful suite. The Little Gamers came along too and it was great to have a weekend away with them before entering my birthday week. Then I had a surprise trip to the Harry Potter studios, got some wonderful presents and managed to eat out for 4 days straight! So thank you to everyone who made my birthday the most memorable birthday ever!

The Last of Us - Multiplayer Impressions
Posted by
Mark
Whilst the gaming world is enamored with the incredible single player experience. I have found myself drawn to the multi-player game, Factions. I don't really indulge in multi-player sides of games these day, so for me to find myself choosing to play Factions over finishing the single player is quite a big thing for me. The reason for this is simple. Naughty Dog have taken a tried and tested formula and wrapped it up in some nice new wrapping paper, that expands on the world of The Last of Us.

Beyond: Two Souls - Tribeca Official Trailer
Posted by

David Cage took to the stage of the Tribeca Film Festival to reveal the first extended public look at Quantic Dream's latest cinematic epic, Beyond: Two Souls. His demonstration featured a 35 minute section of gameplay showing a portion of Jodie's life. She is living on the streets, alone and freezing in the harsh winter. She falls in with a group of homeless people who take her in a look after her and show her the ropes of how to survive on the street. As the demo progresses, Jodie feels part of the group and helps them find money for food (cue amazing guitar scene), defend one of them when they are attacked by a gang of thugs and help when one of the group goes into labour.

Is this the end for the Vita?
Posted by
Mark
Let's be honest, as console launches go the Vita has suffered more than most. Seeing dramatically low sales, even in Japan which has seen the Vita regularly outsold by the PSP and nowhere close to the 3DS. This possibly due to the initial high price point (3G RRP was £279.99) compared to other portable devices at launch. The consoles price has dropped to a very reasonable level. Then the software line up has not been tremendous, with long gaps between releases, which is not very unusual for a new console. In the UK there has been, up until very recently, little to no marketing of the Vita via mainstream outlets. Supermarkets that initially stocked the console and software have mostly stopped selling it altogether.

A quick glance at Metacritic paints a different picture mixed reviews for Assassins Creed: Liberation and Need for Speed and an absolute panning for Black Ops: Declassified. Along with the critical mauling, there seem to be some very unhappy and vocal Vita owners out there. Then over this side of the pond, the lack of updates as to why Retro City Rampage to arrive on the EU store has seen plenty of further disgruntled comments on the PlayStation blog.
What are Sony doing wrong? How can they save the Vita from an early grave.

With publishers tightening the purse strings, developers have also been unable to dedicate development of the titles to yet another console. This can be seen with Fifa 13, which was pretty much a roster update with a few tweaks to the previous game (which itself was based on the older Fifa 11). Criterion are the only developer to develop a specific Vita version alongside the development of home console versions. The results are astounding. A perfect replication of the open world environment with a slight loss of graphic fidelity and traffic density. Proving that the Vita is more than up to the task of running the title we play at home.

Call of Duty Black Ops Declassified has thrown a doubt in the hopes of the Vita's continued success. Instead of being the glorious defining moment of the Vita so far, it has caused the community to bicker. You can see my first impressions here. It has brought to head the argument of the pricing structure for Vita titles. With some games being retailed for the same amount as its home counter parts many people are not happy. A lot of reviewers are saying that for £40, Call of Duty does not offer enough to warrant that price. The blame is being laid at Sony's doorstep, which is odd because Activision would of set the price for it. If it is one thing Activision are good at it is milking the cash cow.

Next week also sees the first major title to utilise Sony's Cross-Buy scheme. Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale is available on PS3 and Vita. Buy the game on the PS3 though, and you will get a code for the digital download of the Vita game at no extra cost again. Other games to support this currently are Ratchet & Clank: Q Force and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. Hopefully this scheme will include more titles into 2013.

Appealing to the Hardcore JRPG player and Retro gaming enthusiast is commendable thing to do and really does show the flexibility of the platform Sony has created. The PSP survived on this kind of feature set for many years. Is it enough though for a handheld with the power and potential of the Vita to be in the shadow of the 3DS. The system needs more than a Call of Duty game to get people to notice it. The Vita needs one thing... Rockstar.
With several very successful GTA games on the PSP and with the fifth installment due early spring 2013. The time is right for Rockstar to do something very special. As suggested last week by wojciechmusialkiewi (lets call him Jeff) on the Eurogamer Forums, What if GTA: San Andreas was given the HD treatment and launched on the Vita. I know it is a pipe dream at the moment, but just imagine it!
At the moment, the next few months are hugely important for the Vita's future. Currently the 2013 release schedule on the console is looking sparse. Third support is crucial for the long term survival of any system. Hopefully, this time next year I will be able to write about the Vita and its success.
It deserves to succeed, simply because Sony have made a great piece of hardware that is capable of so much and we have only just seen the beginning. Lets hope that Father Christmas can bring the Vita what wants for Christmas... a future.

Mortal Kombat (PS Vita) - Review
Posted by
Mark
Due to the violent nature of this game. This review is for Grown Up gamers only.
Sacrifice! It must be the bane of any game developer when it comes to developing a portable version of their home console title. Many portable versions end up not even resembling their home console counterparts.
Mortal Kombat on the Vita is one of the few exceptions where the developer has taken the bravest of decisions, to give content over style. The graphics have been toned down in the handheld version of 2011's best fighting game. This isn't to say that the game doesn't look stunning, because it does. The character models have lost their richness and close up look more last generation than current generation.

Then there is the immense story mode, which is complete from the home console version, even with the two hours of cut-scenes. Rather than focus on the story of a single player chosen character, the story mode sees the player go through the events of the first three Mortal Kombat tournaments, playing as different series characters in chapters. The storyline and dialogue is gloriously cheesy and filled with action movie cliché.

The actual gameplay is still superb, although people used to the furious action of Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 may find change of pace and fight rhythm quite slow and clunky. Once you get used to the system though, its all good. This is the best control implementation in any of the Mortal Kombat games. The Vita version even goes as far as touch screen enabled X-Ray moves and touch screen Fatalities. Being able to swipe the screen for the inevitable body eviscerating finish move means that even the worst fighters should be able to pull off the ultimate humiliation.

Basically, this is the best fighting game on the Vita so far. Yes, there are more technical and visually better examples (Blazblue and UMvC3) but nothing comes close on the sheer amount of content and enjoyment to be had with this game. I would even go as far to say that this is best Vita title to be released so far.
Verdict: 9 out of 10
