Injustice - Gods Among Us - Demo Impressions

Imagine a world where Superheroes have been pushed too far and have taken control of how the human race should be run. Welcome to the world of Injustice, where DC's best loved Superheroes and Super villains go head to head and fight for the future of the DC Universe. After the Joker destroys Metropolis and tricks the Man of Steel into killing Lois Lane and their unborn child. Superman establishes a new world order. A battle ensues between the forces of Superman's regime and those allied with Batman's insurgency. Heroes become villains and villains become heroes. In this battle to save the world from the tyranny of Superman's new world order.
The demo released yesterday on XBLA and PSN allows you to get to grips with 3 of the 24 playable characters and the Gotham City battleground. You can chose from Batman, Wonder Woman and Lex Luthor. First of all, The presentation is very slick. the main menu and fighter selection all look great and set the tone for the game. The influence of the Mortal Kombat developer, NetherRealm is apparent, as it feels and looks like 2011's Mortal Kombat. The only gripe I would have is that Batman looks a bit, well rubbish. I understand though that the skin in the demo is a battle armour version. The trailer above shows a more traditional Batman outfit.
So the combat is great, more emphasis on flowing, rather than speed. You can use pieces of the environment around you by a quick stab of the R1 button. These environmental attacks range from slamming a dumpster into your foe, punching them into a passing or my favourite Smashing the Bat Signal into them. As well as the more local environmental attacks you can bash your opponent around the multi-tiered level, a la Dead or Alive. Smacking your target off the top off the Gotham rooftops sees them smash into a wall, hammered with a wrecking ball before falling on to the tracks below, just in time to get whacked by a oncoming train, before finally coming to rest in a heap in the streets below. If that wasn't enough, if you can beat them over to the other side of street section and punch them into the Tanker truck, you can fire them back up to the initial rooftop, bouncing off the sides of skyscrapers on the way up. Its over the top, but hey its a superhero game and its damn fun!
Characters have a wide range of attacks on hand and all of these play to their strengths. Both Batman and Luthor can rely on their gadgets to help them. Wonder Woman can either fight with her lasso or switch over to her sword and shield. Of course power moves are there and they just as spectacular as you would imagine. Batman tags his foe with every gadget he has before they get run over by the Batmobile. Doomsday (awesome to see him in the game) pummels you into the ground through the earth, out the other side, turns around and back again (Ouch!). NetherRealm have introduced a new system called the wager system. In the middle of a combo a player can initiate a wager where each of the combatants have to wager a portion of their power meter. The two then rush each over head on and clash, the winner being the one who wagered the most. At least I think that is how it works, I spent most of my time just mashing!
From the demo Injustice looks like it is going to be a great fighting game with the added bonus of having your favourite DC character in it. Add in to the mix the story mode, which if it is as good as the one seen in Mortal Kombat, is worth the money right there. Then a slew of challenge modes, online matches, king of the hill and more. Sounds like in two weeks time it will be more than just Ant and Dec getting ready to rumble (Sorry).
Download the demo now and try for yourself. Injustice: Gods Among Us is released on 19th April on PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U.
Oh, one more thing, NetherRealm.... How about a PS Vita version?
