Batman: Arkham Origins Announced - Coming this October

The great thing about wishes is sometimes they come true! WB Games have announced today the latest title in the amazing Batman: Arkaham series. Batman: Arkham Origins sees the series dip in to the prequel territory, as players will take on the mantle of a young Batman and tackle some of Gotham;s fiercest criminals before they became the terrors of Arkham Asylum. The press release states...

Batman: Arkham Origins features an expanded Gotham City and introduces an original prequel storyline set several years before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City, the first two critically acclaimed games of the franchise.  Taking place before the rise of Gotham City’s most dangerous criminals, the game showcases a young and unrefined Batman as he faces a defining moment in his early career as a crime fighter that sets his path to becoming the Dark Knight. As the story unfolds, players will meet many important characters for the first time and forge key relationships.

The interesting thing about this game is that is being developed not by Rocksteady, but WB Games Montreal. Do not worry though, WB Games Montreal have already earned their Bat-wings by developing the Wii U Batman: Arkham City - Armoured Edition. Not much else is know at the moment, a few screen shots show Deathstroke, Black Mask and Penguin before the glass monocle incident. The look and feel from these shots appear to have captured the feel of the previous games. More details will be coming soon as US magazine , Game Informer have an exclusive look at the game over the next month.

As if the announcement of the newest Arkham title wasn't enough for one day. WB Games also announced Batman: Arkham Origin - Blackgate, the first handheld title in the Arkham series coming to both PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS. Blackgates serves as a continuation from the main console game and will be a 2.5D metroidvania style game. Here's the press release...

Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate is a 2.5-D game developed by Armature Studio that brings the Batman Arkham experience for the first time to Nintendo and Sony handheld systems.  A companion game to Batman: Arkham Origins, players can continue the storyline of the console version and discover more details of the Dark Knight’s past.

The good news with this announcemet is the involvement of Armature. Armature was started by ex members of Retro Studio, developers of the Metroid Prime trilogy. They have previously developed the rather excellent Metal Gear Solid HD collection on the Vita.

So all that is left to say now is that both games are aiming for a worldwide release on the 25th October 2013. Batman: Arkham Origins is being released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U and PC, with no word of next generation consoles yet. Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate is being released on Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita.
